Robert Calderwood

I feel extremely privileged to have been invited to take on the role of Chairman of the Scottish Division of the IHM. This delight is tinged with some trepidation following on from the highly successful term of my predecessor, Malcolm Wright, but it is pleasing that I will be able to call on his experience as he continues in his national role as Chairman of the Institute of Healthcare Management in the UK.

The Institute in Scotland has an enviable record for developing services to support IHM members and has also developed a reputation for offering Continuing Professional Development opportunities to the wider healthcare management cohort within NHS Scotland. This position has not come about by chance and I would like to record my personal appreciation of the contributions made by Jim Currie and currently Martin Hill, who have been spearheading these developments on behalf of the IHM in Scotland.

On a personal level, I have been a member of the Institute for almost 40 years and I have participated in and benefitted from the Institute’s educational programmes, initially in securing the Diploma in Healthcare Management and latterly in participating in the extensive provision of Continuing Professional Development programmes within the NHS in Scotland.

The NHS always faces challenges and the coming years will be no different, though perhaps in financial aspects these challenges are as great as any that went before, and the role of the Institute in working with its members and the wider managerial cohort in providing opportunities for colleagues to network, to share experiences and tailor programmes to help provide them with the skills necessary to rise to these challenges will be of paramount importance. I therefore look forward to working with colleagues on the Scottish Council and with the over 600 members in the Scottish Division of the IHM to continue to place the Institute of Healthcare Management at the forefront of educational and CPD programmes in Scotland, as always working with other like-minded bodies and I hope that I can work with colleagues in NHS Scotland to continue to promote the relevance of the IHM in this role and its importance to healthcare managers in the hope that we can continue to see the Scottish Division grow from strength to strength with an increasing membership base as the managerial cohort in Scotland see our relevance to their business agenda.
